Dr. Katie’s Personal Battle With Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition and affects most people to varying degrees throughout their life. It can be mild (few or occasional pimples), moderate (inflammation and redness), or severe (cysts and nodules that never seem to change in size). Treatment should be determined on an individual basis as the root cause of acne can be simple or complex.

As someone who suffered from severe acne in my adult life, I am definitely passionate about finding resolution for my clients. For some people, the answer is straightforward with elimination of a particular food, dietary changes, a probiotic, or sometimes simply reducing stress through exercise, sleep habits, or meditation. For others, the road to recovery requires more detailed investigation through lab testing to identify what the root cause is and can also take a longer period of time before visible significant improvement.

In my case, healing from severe acne took almost two years to completely resolve. My journey to wellness included diet changes such as elimination of gluten and dairy, getting off prescription medications such as levothyroxine, management of other health conditions such as hypothyroidism, blood sugar deregulation, hormonal imbalances, and many lifestyle modifications to reduce stress. There was no one thing that was all encompassing for me to get better. One of the biggest hurdles was accepting that it wasn’t going to be a quick fix to a problem that had seemingly showed up overnight. With complex cases of acne as well as other health conditions, this is absolutely the most challenging part of getting well.

What did I do for treatment? First and most importantly, I took my health into my own hands. I started to learn about how to eat healthier and exercising, doing yoga, and changing my mindset. Along with all these things- chiropractic, kinesiology, massage, functional medicine, lab tests, allergy tests, essential oils and nutritional support. Even though my skin including scarring has healed, I continue to make consistent daily efforts to refine my diet choices and maintain my health.
